Spline Re-Machining

Reduce repair costs by having internal and external splines re-machined back to original specifications when the part is otherwise in good shape. Mitchell Crane’s splined shaft gear manufacturing uses welding and machining processes to ensure that re-machined parts fit back together as they are intended to and perform for years to come.

Splined Shaft Gear Manufacturing

Splined shafts feature jutting keys that mate with specially designed shafts on bearings, bores, bushings, and gears to transfer torque. They must be in good condition and aligned to work properly. In some cases, our experienced staff can re-spline worn shafts back to operational condition. When necessary, we can custom-manufacture spline shafts to meet your needs.

We are proud manufacturers of custom spline shafts for the mining and oil and gas industries. Our re-machined parts meet OEM specifications for proper functioning. In many cases, we can machine an in-stock part and send it out so you can continue operating.

Our Gear Cutting Capabilities

Our team offers splined shaft gear manufacturing for products of various sizes depending on the materials and techniques used. We commonly work with the following materials:

  • Aluminum
  • Brass and bronze alloys
  • Cast iron
  • Plastics, including thermoplastics
  • Steel

Steel is the most common material choice, but gear requirements vary. Our team will work with you to determine which material is the correct choice for your equipment and operating environment.

Applications

We use high-quality machines from Fellows, Gould & Eberhardt, and Lorenz, designed to produce custom spline shaft pieces for:

  • Bearings and bushings: Keys fit into paired bearings and bushings.
  • Gears: Splined shafts transfer torque to gears.
  • Pulleys: Splined shafts can be fixed to pulleys.
  • Rotor hubs: In aerospace, splined shafts mesh with grooves in the rotor hubs on propeller and rotor assemblies.

Re-splining is a cost-effective solution for crane parts where either the internal or external splines are showing wear. Our team will evaluate the part and, when appropriate, re-machine splines to create a mated fit. Our machining processes allow us to create different spline configurations, including crowned, helical, involute, and parallel key splines.

Industries Served

Custom splined shaft assemblies are commonly found in the aerospace, mining, and construction industries. They are widely used in industrial machinery, rail transportation, and for power generation.

Benefits of Spline Re-Machining at Mitchell Crane

Mitchell Crane is family-owned and operated. Since 1957, we have provided customers with exceptional and knowledgeable service on cranes, crane parts, and repairs. We use precision CNC machining services to meet tight tolerances on small and large workpieces.

With experience welding and cutting carbon steel and grey iron castings, we have the knowledge to re-spline just about any part out there whether for a crane or other type of machinery.

Mitchell Crane always evaluates the function of all parts considered for spline repair and has deemed certain parts unrepairable due to the critical function they perform.

Never withhold any critical information about what your parts intended function is from our staff when discussing the potential for a repair.

Mitchell Crane will NOT re-spline or re-pair some hoist components and reserves the right to decline to make repairs to any part that we feel may pose a safety concern.

We always suggest replacing these parts with Mitchell Crane aftermarket parts or genuine original parts from the factory both of which are available through Mitchell Crane.
